Professional, leader, coach

Gavin has a unique combination of 30+ years' leadership experience and professional coaching training. He brings this knowledge and expertise to each coaching conversation, to help leaders through successful transitions and teams towards greater effectiveness, whilst illuminating their authentic selves.

About Gavin

Career History

Gavin graduated from Oxford University, joined Deloitte (then Touche Ross) and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in London before relocating to central Europe. He achieved partnership at the age of 30 and held multiple and diverse leadership roles across the region during a 30-plus year career with the firm.

Whether dealing with clients or colleagues, he is known as a leader who cares for the people he works with. In each role he considered success as including leaving a stronger team than he found, helping individuals to grow and ensuring an effective succession.

Gavin faced many transition opportunities and whether he accepted or declined, he has accumulated vast personal experience of the range of personal and professional considerations to be weighed up. The latest transition, leaving the firm he had called home for so long to set up on his own, was in many ways the easiest, thanks to the lessons he has learned. Most importantly, his learning and personal growth continue as he joins each client on their own journey, forming a partnership for their success.

Approach to Coaching

The starting point to Gavin's coaching is to thoroughly understand the story so far and all dimensions of the transition.  This involves listening, reflecting, challenging and providing a safe space for the client, all through the lens of extensive transition experience and an understanding of common themes, whilst also focusing on the specific context and nuances of each path. Assumptions are questioned, goals are fine-tuned and close attention is paid to what is driving motivation or may undermine ultimate success.

When coaching teams, Gavin helps the team understand how they can be more effective, to become a group which understands its purpose and adopts optimal ways of working. He also coaches the team to think about the future, engage with the full range of stakeholders and to learn continuously.

Approach to Life

Gavin is enjoying the change in life balance and the opportunity to give back - to himself, to his family and to his communities. He values the time he can spend with Jitka and their daughters Karolina & Laura and the family dogs.

Gavin stays active as a leader in non-profit organisations Volunteers for Ukraine, English College Parents Association and Bohemia Invitational Golf Society. He is a member of Rotary International, a mentor in the Equilibrium Programme of the British Chamber of Commerce and supports Dream. Believe. Repeat., a Kenyan organisation helping teengage girls stay in school.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coaching sessions are confidential and one to one. I conduct sessions of 60-90 minutes either face to face or online. We will hold an initial session to determine chemistry face to face, if possible.  Sessions can be scheduled with a frequency to suit the circumstances, allowing appropriate time to embed insights and implement actions, whilst also observing the need to maintain momentum to achieve sustainable change.

Yes, I also have team coaching certification and extensive experience leading and working with teams.  The subject of the team may come up during individual coaching or the team may be the primary focus. I believe in taking a systemic approach, to help the team optimise its effectiveness in the organisation and environment in which it operates. I will typically work with a second coach to address the needs of a team. I also specialise in teams which are working together remotely and deliver online team coaching with colleagues from Collective Works Team Coaching https://www.collectiveworkscoaching.com/

Neuroscience of Coaching: Mastering the Science Behind Coaching and Behavioural Change (Coaching.com, Ann Betz)

Leadership in business, especially at time of transition, is all-encompassing and can affect all aspects of a leader’s life. In my experience, transitions have impacted relationships, finances, health, legal status and family members, each of which may be a focus area for other coaching professionals. My experience enables me to appreciate the broad implications of a transition, whilst maintaining focus on the business-related dimensions. If one of these ancillary areas becomes the dominant feature of a coaching relationship, going beyond my core competence, I recommend the client to work with a specialist, making a referral if I know of someone suitable.

My training has been undertaken with organisations and individuals who follow generally recognised principles of coaching, such as those published by the International Coaching Federation and European Mentoring & Coaching Council. The Core Competencies and Ethical Standards of the ICF can be found at www.coachingfederation.org. I have conducted many hundreds of hours of coaching and mentoring, the majority as an internal coach role and more recently as external coach.

I work with the results of 360 or similar assessments, which the client may have completed and which bring additional data and perspectives into the conversation. I have experienced many such tools and methodologies over my career and can supplement the support offered by the administrators of such assessments to bring value through the coaching conversations. I am accredited to assess the Complete Values Profile (https://complete-coherence.com/assessment-certification-2/), which clients find useful to work with and develop their own values, collaborate better by understanding the values of others and to enhance team performance by understanding team values.  I am also accredited to use the T360 team assessment tool of GTCI (Global Team Coaching Institute), which enhances the discovery phase of a team coaching assignment.
